The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his reported claim that he won the 2023 presidential election despite saying he had no evidence to support it.
The council described the claim as a “troubling display of delusion”, accusing Obi of disregarding facts in his continued remarks about the election outcome.
In a statement issued on Friday, the council’s spokesman, Dele Alake, faulted remarks attributed to Obi during a recent interview with the BBC.
“I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence,” Obi was quoted as saying.
Alake said the remarks raised questions about Obi’s approach to public claims, arguing that allegations should be supported by verifiable facts rather than personal assertions.
He also criticised Obi’s continued insistence that he won the election, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared President Bola Tinubu the winner and that the election tribunal and the Supreme Court upheld the result.
The APC spokesman further accused Obi of exaggerating facts, describing the conduct as unbecoming of a presidential aspirant.
Alake also challenged the former Anambra State governor to honour an earlier pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was established that his administration had left liabilities for the state.
According to Alake, the state’s financial records had established the existence of the liabilities referenced in the pledge.
The statement also defended Tinubu’s administration, claiming that its reforms had helped stabilize the economy, expand infrastructure, support businesses and young people, improve education and healthcare, and create job opportunities.
