Eighty-seven-year-old sports writer and Abia State correspondent for the Nigerian Pilot, Joe Akwarandu, has been nominated for a merit award by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) during its 60th anniversary celebrations.
The veteran journalist, who hails from Abia State, expressed his gratitude for the recognition in a statement released yesterday in Umuahia, the state capital.
The statement noted that Akwarandu, who has dedicated over 40 years to the profession, began his career in the 1970s in Enugu. He later worked in Lagos and Imo States before returning to his home state.
He has covered numerous sports events, including World Cup tournaments, in various countries. The prestigious merit award honours hard work and professionalism,” the statement said.
Akwarandu has received multiple awards and has served in various capacities, including as an executive committee member of SWAN. He is currently one of the patrons of the state chapter of the association.
The award ceremony, where Governor Alex Otti will also be recognised for his contributions to sports development, is scheduled to take place from 29th to 30th October 2025 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
