Odemwingie Warns NFF Over Foreign-Recruitment Drive

Former Nigerian international Osaze Odemwingie has issued a strong caution to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urging football officials to stop pleading with foreign-born players of Nigerian descent to turn out for the Super Eagles.

In a chat with Brila FM, Odemwingie argued that Nigeria’s national team is a prestigious football institution—not a struggling club side that should have to beg for talent. He insisted that the Super Eagles’ legacy alone should be enough to attract top players, and the NFF’s current approach of desperate persuasion is unbecoming.

The NFF has recently been courting several Europe-based prospects, including Michael Kayode, Tosin Adarabioyo, Caleb Okoli, and Kingsley Ehizibue, among others. But Odemwingie believes this strategy diminishes the value of representing Nigeria.

“These days, it’s like they want the pampering,” Odemwingie said. “Me, as you know, I don’t need no pampering. If Nigeria pampers me, it’s more than enough for me. We love everyone, and there are some cases where the love wasn’t based on the decision for the love of a European country—unless maybe you have mixed heritage.”

The former West Bromwich Albion and Lokomotiv Moscow forward drew from his own experience to make his point clear. He explained that growing up, the rules of international football created a sacred bond the moment a player wore a nation’s shirt.

“Like me, growing up, there was a rule: once you wear the shirt of a national team, you can’t wear another team’s shirt,” he recalled. “I love Russia, but my connection is with Nigeria when it comes to football and sport. I won’t judge anybody.”

Odemwingie then painted a vivid picture of Nigeria’s growing football diaspora, noting how many elite players across Europe carry Nigerian bloodlines. He even joked that one day, England’s entire squad could be of Nigerian origin—a testament to the country’s genetic footballing wealth.

“Imagine one day the whole football squad of England will be Nigerians. It’s Nigerian genes that are showing themselves,” he said. “How will Nigeria win the World Cup when our talents go out to serve other people?”

But instead of lamenting, Odemwingie predicted a turning point. He believes that once Nigeria improves its football infrastructure and tactical culture, the tide will reverse—and players will beg to represent the Super Eagles, not the other way around.

“One day we will have the opposite effect—when people will want to play for Nigeria and bring the World Cup trophy home, because these players are good players,” he said.

“They grew up in a better football environment—maybe tactically and technically sound. So far, Nigeria relies on physicality and talent, but you need to add that part where it is mechanical.”

Comparing European and Nigerian football development, Odemwingie noted a fundamental difference in training philosophy.

“Europeans, regardless of where they are from, right from childhood, they are mechanical. They are like robots—they are wired to do this job tactically sound and keeping it simple,” he concluded.

His message to the NFF was clear: stop begging. Instead, build a system so strong that every Nigerian-heritage player dreams of wearing the green-and-white jersey.
