Ogun State government has said that the health conditions of the teachers, as well as the 30 students of Our Lady of Apostles Primary and Secondary School (OLAPSS) who inhaled poisonous gas leak in Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State on Wednesday, are responding to treatments.
The disclosure came as the commissioner for Environment, Dr Ola Oresanya accompanied by the Ijebu-Ode local government area chairman, Mr Dare Alebiosu and the permanent secretaries in the Ministries of Environment and Education, Dr Kafayat Lawal and Mrs Oluwatosin Oloko, visited the schools and the General Hospital, where the affected 30 students and two teachers are hospitalised.
The state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, had ordrered the immediate closure of the affected schools in Ijebu-Ode pending the determination of the root cause of the unfortunate incident, with the aim of preventing future occurrences.
Oresanya, in a statement he issued yesterday on behalf of the governor, said Governor Abiodun had ordered all security agencies in the state to immediately commence an investigation into the incident, stressing that the probe would reveal the root cause and offer useful suggestions to prevent any future occurrence.
He stated that state safety officials and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) team have deployed a gas analyser to track the source of the gas.
He said the governor had also directed the immediate opening of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, to offer free treatment to other students and residents of the affected areas.
