The newly-elected Executive Chairman of Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon Lanre Oyegbola-Sodipo, has fulfilled his campaign promise to hit the ground running by launching the “Elderly Care” initiative called ”Eto Ilera ati Itoju Awon Agba.”
According to him, the programme underscores his commitment to providing robust support for senior citizens within the local government.
In his formal acceptance speech, Hon. Oyegbola-Sodipo declared “ISE YA, connoting he was starting work immediately while reaffirming his dedication to improving the lives of residents of the local government, especially the elderly.
He explained that the elderly care initiative would offer senior citizens dedicated healthcare services, monthly stipends, and other essential support.
Sharing a personal story that inspired the initiative, Hon. Oyegbola-Sodipo recounted: “On the election day, I met Mrs Janet Akamo, an elderly woman in her late 90s, who came to vote to support her frame with a walking stick. She retorted as she prepared to go back home after casting her vote, ‘ I came out to vote because of myself, my children, and my grandchildren. That encounter solidified my resolve that our seniors must enjoy the dividends of democracy.’
He stated that the features of the “Elderly Care” initiative include subsidised meals that provide affordable nutrition for senior citizens, transportation assistance to support their access to medical appointments, and socialisation by facilitating recreational activities that foster community bonding.
Oyegbola-Sodipo said, “By implementing this initiative, Abeokuta North Local Government is prioritising the well-being and dignity of its elderly population while reinforcing its commitment to inclusive governance.”
He also appointed critical aides to drive his administration’s developmental agenda. The appointees include Mr Ibrahim Adeniyi Okedara, Chief of Staff; Mr Oluwakayode Ajibola, Head of Media and Deputy Chief of Staff; Mr Idris Beita, Special Assistant on Inter-Ethnic Relations; Mr Solomon Akibo, Special Assistant on Works; Mr Sunday Afolabi, Special Assistant on Agriculture; and Mrs Temitope Akiode, Project Coordinator for the Elderly Care Initiative.
