Former inspector-general of police (IGP) and ex-chairman of the Police Service Commission, Sir Mike Mbama Okiro, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He shared a personal anecdote from his youth, recalling a memorable moment during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in 1977 when he had a close encounter with Buhari, then military governor of Borno State.

He said, “I was among four corps members selected to visit the Government House. What an honour it was to have a handshake with Governor Buhari himself!” Okiro recalled. “That moment has stayed with me all these years and is a testament to the impact he had on the lives of Nigerians, even at that early stage of leadership.”

In a statement he issued yesterday, Okiro described Buhari’s death as a profound loss to Nigeria, noting that his leadership, commitment to national stability and democratic ideals would be remembered for generations.

“It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said. “On behalf of myself, I extend my deepest condolences to the Buhari family, the government, and the good people of Nigeria.”

Okiro paid glowing tribute to the late president’s legacy, describing him as a tireless patriot who dedicated his life to building a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria. He said Buhari’s contributions to national development, security reform, and institutional discipline have left an indelible mark on the country’s history.

“President Buhari’s leadership and vision for Nigeria will be remembered for generations to come,” he added. “His commitment to democracy, stability, and progress will forever be etched in the annals of our nation’s history.”

He concluded by praying for the repose of the late president’s soul and urging Nigerians to uphold the values of service, patriotism, and integrity that Buhari exemplified.

“May his legacy continue to inspire future generations, and may we strive together to build a better Nigeria in his honour,” Okiro said.
