In a dramatic season opener at Swangard Stadium, AFC Toronto clawed back from a 2-1 deficit to secure a pulsating 3-2 victory over Vancouver Rise, with Nigerian forward Esther Okoronkwo delivering a Player of the Match performance that included a goal and an assist.
The visitors started brightly, but Vancouver Rise struck twice to take a commanding lead midway through the second half. Trailing 2-1, AFC Toronto looked rattled until Okoronkwo, the ever-versatile 29-year-old striker, took matters into her own hands.
Early in the second half, Okoronkwo turned provider, threading a pass to midfielder Sarah Stratigakis, who calmly slotted home the equalizer and reignited the away bench.
Then, with just 18 minutes left on the clock, Okoronkwo stepped up again—this time as the finisher. Pouncing on a loose ball inside the box, she fired a low, powerful shot past the Vancouver goalkeeper to make it 3-2.
The Nigerian international, who registered an impressive 11 goals and eight assists in 29 league appearances for AFC Toronto last season, showed her trademark composure and work rate throughout.
She was given a standing ovation when she made way for Kaila Novak in the 84th minute.
Head coach’s post-match praise centered on Okoronkwo’s leadership: “Esther is the heartbeat of this team. When we were down, she didn’t just create chances she demanded the ball and changed the game.”
The win marks a perfect start to the season for AFC Toronto, and with Okoronkwo already in top form, fans will be hoping for many more match-winning displays from the Nigerian star.
