The Edo State Government has formally requested the constitution of a Special Court to fast-track the hearing and determination of cases relating to cultism and kidnapping across the state, describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen criminal justice administration and tackle rising security concerns in the State.

The request, at the instance of Governor Monday Okpebholo, was contained in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq., and addressed to the Chief Judge of the State.

Titled, “Request for the Constitution of a Special Court for Offences Relating to Cultism and Kidnapping”, the SSG stated that he was writing “at the instance of the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to formally request Your Lordship to constitute a Special Court for the expeditious hearing and determination of cases relating to cultism.

The state government explained that the request was driven by the governor’s determination to address the twin challenges of cult-related violence and kidnapping, which have continued to pose security threats in parts of the state.

According to the letter, “This request is necessitated by His Excellency’s unwavering commitment to tackling and eradicating the menace of cultism and kidnapping in the State, as well as strengthening the administration of criminal justice in this regard.

“In view of the foregoing, His Excellency respectfully recommends the nomination of three (3) Judges, or such number as Your Lordship may deem fit, to constitute the Special Court,” the letter stated.

The State government expressed optimism that the judiciary would give the request urgent attention, noting that establishing the court would enhance efforts to curb criminal activity and improve justice delivery.
