Deputy governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, has said the SHINE Agenda of Governor Monday Okpebholo is already making significant impact in the state’s education sector.
Idahosa made the remark when he received the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
In a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Mr Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor said there has been noticeable improvement in the academic performance of primary school pupils across the three senatorial districts of the state
He attributed the development to the education policies and reforms introduced by the present administration.
Idahosa assured the teachers that the Okpebholo-led government would continue to prioritise their welfare as part of efforts to enhance their productivity and strengthen the education system.
He commended members of the union for their dedication and commitment to the development of children in the state.
According to him, the knowledge and values teachers impart to pupils today will ultimately shape their future and determine the kind of society that will emerge tomorrow.
The deputy governor further stated that the current administration met the education sector in a deplorable condition, noting that there was a shortage of teachers while many school facilities had deteriorated.
He, however, said the governor had taken decisive steps to revitalise the sector through massive renovation of school infrastructure and recruitment of teachers.
Idahosa disclosed that about 5,000 teachers were recently employed by the state government in fulfilment of the governor’s campaign promises.
Earlier, the Edo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Comrade Imaruagheru Lucky, who led members of the union’s executive on the visit, expressed appreciation to the state government for creating an enabling environment for teachers to perform their duties.
He commended the government for clearing the backlog of promotions and stagnation affecting teachers in the state.
Lucky also lauded the administration for renovating dilapidated school buildings, recruiting over 5,000 teachers, ensuring prompt payment of salaries including the 13th month salary, as well as organising professional development programmes for newly recruited teachers and training and retraining of existing teachers across the three senatorial districts of the state.
