Athletes competing at the ongoing Olympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina have reportedly been highly active, both on and off the slopes. Reports indicate that the 10,000 condoms strategically distributed throughout the Athletes’ Village by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have been fully utilised, with requests for more.
Mark Adams, spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee, confirmed the depletion of the initial condom supply during a press briefing on Sunday, after Valentine’s Day. Far from expressing concern, the IOC appears to welcome this development, encouraging athletes to socialise and remain active, provided it does not impact their competitive performance.
While popular belief often suggests that sexual activity before a sporting event can be detrimental for men and beneficial for women, research indicates otherwise. Studies suggest that sexual activity occurring 10-12 hours prior to an event may actually enhance performance for both sexes, by aiding stress relief, promoting relaxation, and improving focus. It remains to be seen what impact this increased social activity will have on the number of world records broken during these Games.
In terms of the medal table, Norway currently leads with 11 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Host nation Italy sits in second place with 8 gold, 4 silver, and 10 bronze medals, while the United States is third with 5 gold, 8 silver, and 4 bronze medals. The long-standing quest for an African nation to secure a Winter Olympics medal continues, a trend observed since the inaugural Winter Games in 1924.
