Prominent All Progressives Congress leaders in Delta State on Tuesday shunned the party’s state congress.
The boycott confirmed the division among party leaders in the state, with one bloc loyal to the Ibori/Omo-Agege camp and another aligned with Sheriff Oborevwori.
Among those absent were former Deputy Senate President and ex-Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ovie Omo Agege; Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko; and daughter of former Governor James Ibori, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, who represents the Ethiope Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Some founding leaders of the party prior to the defection of members from the Peoples Democratic Party into the APC also boycotted the congress.
Speaking shortly after the congress, Governor Oborevwori, noting the absence of several prominent leaders, stated: “Anyone who did not come for this state congress is not an indigene of Delta State.”
In Delta North, the factions are split between those loyal to immediate past governor Ifeanyi Okowa and those aligned with Senator Nwoko.
Sources said the crisis is linked to allegations of imposition of candidates during the ward and local government congresses, which reportedly continued into the state congress allegedly in favour of members of the defunct PDP who recently defected to the APC.
Meanwhile, former Delta State PDP Chairman, Solomon Arenyeka, emerged by consensus as the APC State Chairman.
