The President of the Nigeria Association of Auctioneers, Alhaji Aliyu Kiliya, has called for stricter regulation in the auctioneering sector to ensure it contributes effectively to the national economy.
In an interview, Kiliya emphasized that only experienced members of the association are qualified to train and educate the public on best practices in auctioneering.
“This is a sensitive sector governed by laws and regulations. Only our association has the mandate and expertise to conduct training aligned with global standards. The public should avoid falling for unauthorized institutions offering short-term training,” he warned.
Kiliya, a veteran in the field with over 40 years of experience, shared insights into his journey from public service to leading the auctioneering sector.
He noted that auctioneering has the potential to generate significant revenue for the government, citing past contributions such as raising funds to support the 2017-2019 budgets through the sale of unused national assets.
“If the government partners with us, we can raise substantial funds to implement national budgets without borrowing,” he stated.
He highlighted some of his achievements, including drafting a bill to regulate the sector, recovering government assets misappropriated after privatization, and preventing the removal of core public assets.
He also initiated plans to introduce public auctioneering education in Nigerian languages at Bayero University Kano.
Kiliya expressed his commitment to stabilizing the sector through proper regulation, quality training, and adherence to the association’s constitution.
He urged the government to partner with the association to enhance revenue generation while ensuring professionalism and discipline among members.
“No one is ever tired of serving their fatherland. My vision is to leave behind a unified and disciplined sector that operates transparently and respects the rule of law,” he concluded.
