A former military governor of Plateau and Katsina states, General Lawrence Onoja (rtd), has extended his condolences to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, over the passing of his mother, Madam Lydia Yilwatda.
Madam Yilwatda died on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, at the age of 83.
In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, Onoja expressed deep sorrow over the loss and urged Prof. Yilwatda and the entire Yilwatda family to be consoled by the exemplary life of service and faith that Madam Lydia lived.
He particularly highlighted her unwavering dedication to the propagation of the gospel, noting her significant role as a respected women leader in the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), where she ministered alongside her late husband, Reverend Toma Goshewe Yilwatda, across several states in Northern Nigeria.
Describing the passing of Madam Lydia as a great loss not only to her family but also to the people of Plateau State and the nation, Gen. Onoja noted that her moral guidance, religious conviction, and community service would be sorely missed.
“As someone who considers Plateau State a second home, having served as Military Governor from 1986 to 1988 and later as General Officer Commanding (G.O.C) 3 Armoured Division, Jos, I feel this loss personally,” he stated.
He emphasised that Madam Lydia’s legacy of faith, moral uprightness, and selfless service remains an enduring example for future generations.
The elder statesman prayed for God to grant Prof. Yilwatda and his family the fortitude to bear the loss and for the soul of the departed to rest in eternal peace.
“May her memory continue to inspire acts of goodwill and community service in all who knew her,” he added.
