OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has warned that the rapid development of artificial intelligence could lead to severe consequences for humanity in two major ways.
Writing on X after midnight on Monday, Altman stated that humanity must avoid losing control of the future to AI systems. He added that the second major danger is the concentration of power, in which a single person or company uses an extraordinarily powerful AI to impose their worldview on everyone else.
Altman and Elon Musk recently supported a letter by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urging tech companies to slow down work on top AI models. This comes after former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, warning that aggressive AI development poses existential risks to human life.
Meanwhile, global competition over AI technology continues between the United States and China. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Monday that fear-mongering and confrontation would only disrupt global AI governance.
