As part its severance package for retired dockworkers, Five Star Logistics Terminal has disbursed over N122 million via cheques to 94 recent retirees at the seaport terminal.
The disbursement is part of the terminal operator’s severance package for retired dockworkers.
Speaking at the event, the terminal manager, Five Star Logistics Limited, Jaysing Kamthe, who presided over the event yesterday, described the development as a fulfilment of the terminal’s responsibility to its workforce, even as he expressed delight at the peaceful termination of the contracts.

“Five Star engaged four stevedoring companies who provided about 94 workers that are being properly disengaged today. They have received their cheques which demonstrates the company’s prompt commitment to their welfare,” Kamthe said.

He disclosed the four stevedoring companies as; Ilutex Limited with 21 workers; Sahih Limited with 25 workers; Macbanadot with 26 workers; and Good Intention with 22 workers.

The terminal operator thanked the workers for their service to the terminal and also praised the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) for its role in managing peace and professionalism of the workforce.

Also speaking, the Human Resource manager at the Terminal, Clement Imoh, said: “In the past whenever a seaport terminal disengaged workers, especially dockworkers, it came with conflicts and disputes between the union and the organisation. What we have witnessed today is unique because it is a peaceful occasion. This is the best way to disengage workers.”

“Five Star management has a very good relationship with its workers and the unions. We respect and value everyone; from the President General of MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju to the lower union members.”

He, however, advised the disengaged workers to gainfully utilise the severance package via investments or businesses that guarantee steady flow of income.

Also speaking, the MWUN representative said it is a good outing to see terminal operators, unions and workers on the same page with respect to retirement packages for dockworkers.

“We commend Five Star for this kind gesture and we also thank NIMASA for this occasion and specially for prioritising the welfare of the disengaged officials,” he said.

Guests at the event include; NIMASA’s deputy director, Maritime Labour, Tin Can Island Port, was represented by the Port Services Controller, Uche Odokwe; Customer Care Manager, Five Star Logistics, Chuks Okereafor; as well as MWUN officials.
