‘Opportunistic, Inconsistent Politician Ever’— Onanuga Blasts Peter Obi Over Possible ADC Exit

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, has launched a sharp criticism of former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, describing him as “opportunistic” and “inconsistent” following remarks suggesting he could leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Onanuga’s reaction followed Obi’s appearance on Arise News Channel’s Prime Time show on Monday night, where the former Anambra State governor hinted at a possible exit from the ADC if the party’s internal processes were compromised.

Taking to X shortly after the interview, Onanuga wrote, “Peter Obi, the peripatetic, opportunistic and inconsistent politician ever to operate in Nigeria hints that he may leave the ADC, the way he left APGA, PDP and Labour. Listen to him.”

Obi, however, during the interview, defended his history of party defections during the interview, insisting that his decisions have always been guided by principle rather than political convenience.

“I don’t have a long time in politics, if I have to move twenty times, I will do it. I cannot be talking about change, I cannot be talking about something new, you cannot use the process of yesterday to build tomorrow,” he said.

The former governor also alleged that his departure from the Labour Party was orchestrated by internal sabotage aimed at trapping him in a crisis-ridden system.

“They put fire in the house and they were shocked that I was able to escape, they thought I would be there for the fire to burn me. When I now escape, they will now say Peter Obi cannot stay to put out the fire which they put,” Obi stated.

Speaking on his current position within the ADC, Obi acknowledged that some former political associates from parties he previously left are now his colleagues, stressing that present conduct outweighs past affiliations.

“What is important is not what people were yesterday, it’s what they are today. I am in ADC with the same people, and I can tell you, some of whom I left in PDP and other parties but we are going through the same process, if that process is again compromised, I will speak out,” he said.

Reiterating his stance on political integrity, Obi maintained that he would not hesitate to change platforms if necessary.

“If I have to move twenty times, I will do it. You cannot use the process of yesterday to build tomorrow,” he added.
