Veteran Irish actress and Oscar winner, Brenda Fricker, has passed away at the age of 81 following a period of failing health.
Fricker, who made cinematic history as the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award, died peacefully on Thursday evening in Dublin, Ireland. Her passing was confirmed by her talent agent, Phil Belfield.
“We will never see her like again, and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield said in a statement. “I was honoured to know, love, and work with her.”
Fricker achieved international acclaim in 1990 when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her powerful portrayal of Bridget Fagan Brown in the film My Left Foot.
To global audiences, she remains deeply beloved for her iconic role as the Central Park “Pigeon Lady” who befriended Kevin McCallister in the 1992 Christmas classic, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. She was also a staple on British television, starring as Nurse Megan Roach in the popular BBC medical drama Casualty for over two decades.
Tributes have continued to pour in from world leaders and colleagues. Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Simon Harris, paid his respects, describing Fricker as a “national treasure” and one of the finest cultural ambassadors the country has ever produced.
