Osun State has taken the coveted first position among the 36 states of the federation in terms of responsiveness and filling out the requisite institutional and students’ data for the Nigeria Education Loans Fund (NELFUND).
The managing director of NELFUND, Mr Akintunde Sawyer who disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo said the targeted beneficiaries are indigent students.
“They will pay according to their earnings, in fact, we will not ask them to pay us directly, we will ask their employer to check your register, which we would have set up to show that this individual has a role of loan and there would be direct deduction by the employer”.
The managing director lauded Governor Adeleke for embracing the vision of President Bola Tinubu on the loan scheme, asserting that the Osun Governor represents an enviable model in sectoral push for good governance.
Responding, Governor Adeleke expressed appreciation to the NELFUND management for the award and to President Tinubu for activating the initiative.
However, he urged NELFUND management to ensure that the student loan system does not become a debt trap.
Adeleke tasked the management of NELFUND to innovate within its mandate on how to make its operations sustainable adding that debt trap must never be experienced in Nigeria’s students’ loan operations.
