Hamburg’s Philip Otele will serve a two-match suspension after the German Football Association (DFB) upheld his red card following the recent North derby defeat to Werder Bremen.
The winger was dismissed for “rough play against an opponent” during the heated 3-1 loss. The DFB’s sports court announced its decision on Tuesday, confirming that Otele will miss Hamburg SV’s upcoming league fixtures against Hoffenheim on 25th April and Eintracht Frankfurt on 2nd May. This absence could prove significant as Hamburg battle for crucial points in the final stages of the season.
Despite Hamburg’s appeal for a review hearing, the governing body refused to reduce the ban, stating that Otele’s sending-off was justified under their regulations. The DFB’s official statement made no reference to Hamburg’s challenge, focusing solely on the disciplinary outcome.
The decision has, however, drawn some unexpected reactions. Referee Florian Exner, who officiated the derby, reportedly described the red card as “harsh” immediately after the match – an unusual admission that may have fuelled Hamburg’s hopes of a successful appeal.
Hamburg’s managing director, Eric Huwer, expressed his frustration, highlighting what he perceives as inconsistencies in the DFB’s disciplinary rulings. “When it comes to the red card against Otele, suddenly there is talk of a point of impact, which we were not allowed to use again in Freiburg in the duel between Torunarigha and Manzambi because it was supposedly a football-typical movement,” Huwer commented, criticising the DFB’s framework.
He added, “At the end of the day, these are many terminological discrepancies that we do not agree with,” suggesting that similar incidents are being interpreted differently depending on the specific match and officials involved.
