Governor Alex Otti flagged off construction of 1,200 housing units in Umuahia, Abia State, ending 18 years of delays.

The estate forms part of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, making Abia one of the first states to implement the scheme and the first in the South-East.

Governor Otti addressed attendees at the groundbreaking. He said: “This is about the welfare of our people. Every other consideration; politics, ethnicity, religion, comes secondary.”

Otti stated that the state secured land for the project after discussions with FHA officials in 2024, which led to federal approval.

He noted that the state has paid compensation to over 800 of approximately 900 affected landowners for the 100-hectare site.

FHA managing director, Oyetunde Ojo said the selection of Umuahia resulted from the Abia government’s readiness and cooperation.

Ojo stated: “We are building more than homes. We are building a model city.” He added that the scheme aims to address Nigeria’s housing deficit and support local economies.
