Otukpo, the heartbeat of Idoma land and headquarters of Otukpo local government area in Benue State, recently transformed into a living canvas of culture, colour, and celebration as it hosted the 14th edition of the Idoma International Carnival. For four days, the town became the epicentre of heritage, music, and joy, drawing visitors from across the country and beyond. HENRY TYOHEMBA writes that the carnival was not just an event, it was a grand celebration of identity, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Idoma people.
Last December, the streets of Otukpo buzzed with energy far beyond what any stage or screen could capture. City parades, crowded playgrounds, and lively jamborees turned ordinary spaces into extraordinary venues of happiness and festivity. Children laughed, families danced, and the air was filled with music, colour, and cheer, a true December in paradise.
The climax of the 14th edition of the Idoma international carnival was a vibrant, artistic, and love-filled spectacle that left attendees in awe, celebrating both the joy of the season and the richness of Idoma heritage.
Beyond the cheers and thrills, the carnival also highlighted meticulous organisation and cultural excellence. Every parade, performance, and display reflected careful planning and an authentic showcase of Idoma traditions. While the festival radiated joy, it also stood as a testament to the community’s commitment to peace, unity, and the preservation of its cultural legacy.
In every rhythm, every costume, and every smile, Otukpo proved that the Idoma International Carnival is more than a festival, it is a living story of heritage and pride.
What began in 2013 as the Agila Social and Economic Carnival has since evolved into a globally recognised cultural spectacle. Today, the Idoma International Carnival stands as a vibrant melting pot of Idoma heritage, where culture, music, dance, fashion, art, pageantry, and cuisine converge in perfect harmony, showcasing the richness, creativity, and unity of the Idoma people to audiences from near and far.
The 2025 celebration officially kicked off on December 23 with Idoma Cultural Day, a day devoted to identity, memory, and pride. Cultural troupes from across Idoma land gathered to showcase age-old traditions, filling the air with music, dance, and colour.
The event thrilled participants and dignitaries alike, including the paramount ruler of the Idoma Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, the Och’Idoma, Agaba’Idu Elaigwu John Odogbo, as the town came alive in a spectacular display of ancestral pride and heritage.
Masqueraders, adorned in intricate regalia, commanded the arena with electrifying performances, while cultural groups dazzled spectators with vibrant dances, rich folklore, and colourful expressions of Idoma history, earning thunderous applause from the crowd.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Edwin Ochai, President of the Idoma International Carnival, reflected on the festival’s remarkable journey, a vision nurtured over thirteen years of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment, culminating in one of West Africa’s largest and most celebrated street carnivals.
According to Dr. Ochai, the carnival was born out of a profound love for Idoma culture and a firm belief that culture is sacrosanct to the growth, unity, and development of any society.
In a historic moment, the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agaba’Idu Elaigwu John Odogbo, declared December 23 of every year as “Idoma Day”, a day to be celebrated and observed by Idoma people across the globe
He declared, “By the grace of God, and by the authority of the Idoma Area Traditional Council, I now make this declaration: henceforth, the 23rd of December every year shall be officially recognised as Idoma Cultural Day.
“Culture thrives where there is cooperation, not competition of ego. Heritage grows where there is collective ownership, not fragmentation.”
The Och’Idoma emphasised that the strength of the Idoma nation does not lie in rival groupings or divided forces, but in one people, one identity, and one cultural umbrella, united by mutual respect and a shared purpose.
“I therefore call on the leadership of the Idoma International Carnival and all cultural groups to key into this vision. Only organisations operating under one recognised umbrella shall use the Och’Idoma Square. Fragmentation will no longer be encouraged.
“We shall plan together, not separately. We shall promote excellence, not mediocrity. Unity is not the loss of identity; unity is the protection of destiny.”
He also unveiled a far-reaching cultural blueprint aimed at preserving Idoma identity, restoring unity, and repositioning culture as a cornerstone of development.
The royal proclamation was made during the Idoma Cultural Day
celebration on December 23, 2025, under the broader vision of the
Idoma International Carnival. Commending Dr Ochai and his team, the monarch urged all sons and daughters of Idoma land to rise as
ambassadors and showcase the beauty of their heritage to the world.
Wheels of thunder roared through Otukpo as professional bikers delivered an adrenaline-charged spectacle, injecting a modern thrill into the cultural festivities. Spectators were kept on the edge of their seats as the stunt team performed heart-stopping feats, including wheelies, stoppies, acrobatics, burnouts, drifting, and jaw-dropping jumps, leaving residents and visitors alike in awe.
Otukpo, fondly called Texas Town, transformed into a vibrant sea of colour as the grand carnival procession swept through the streets. Locals and visitors from across Nigeria and beyond, dressed in flamboyant costumes, danced and celebrated in what has now become the largest street party north of the River Niger.
Leading the procession on horseback was Dr Edwin Ochai, accompanied by Nollywood actress Susan Peters, whose presence drew cheers, chants, and admiration from the crowd as they paraded through the streets during a five-hour celebration of unity, culture, and joy.
Among the dignitaries was Rt. Hon. Lami Ogenyi, deputy speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, who lauded the carnival’s transformative impact, noting that it has firmly placed Benue State on Nigeria’s cultural map and elevated the profile of Idoma heritage nationally and internationally.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the procession, Dr Edwin Ochai said,
“In the last few days, I have said this several times, and I will say it again: individually, we are strong, but collectively, we are lacking. We realised that the only way to develop and become a prosperous people, or a thriving nation, is to come together as a team. That was the reason behind this year’s theme: Opyatoha Ofu, which means ‘unity is strength.’ Right now, we are not united, but if we come together, we will become strong.
“I can only appreciate the Idoma people. The turnout today has been massive, beyond our expectations. It shows that the Idoma people have embraced the carnival as their own. The streets are packed, and everywhere you look, people are enjoying themselves. This is just the beginning; we will keep building, adding more each year, and becoming better.”
As the sun set, the rhythm only grew stronger. The night came alive with electrifying performances from various entertainers, who thrilled the crowd deep into the evening, keeping the spirit of celebration alive long after the grand procession.
Beyond the music and spectacle, the economic pulse of the carnival was
unmistakable, hotels were filled, businesses thrived, and the local economy blossomed.
The four-day celebration reached its grand finale on December 26 with the coronation of Jael Tanite Kallamu as Nigerian Carnival Queen 2025. Representing Borno State, Queen Jael captivated judges and spectators alike with her grace, elegance, and stunning cultural displays, leaving an indelible mark on the carnival’s history.
LEADERSHIP Weekend observed that as the carnival drew near, sons and daughters of Idoma land from Abuja, Lagos, and even the diaspora began streaming back to Otukpo, bringing friends and family along to share in the annual celebration of culture and heritage. The streets, hotels, and homes of the town quickly filled with familiar voices and laughter, reflecting a homecoming that was both joyous and deeply meaningful.
Mrs Olivia Ejekwote, who traveled from Lagos with her extended family, beamed as she described her feelings: “Every December, I return home to Otukpo because this carnival reconnects us to our roots. Seeing the streets alive with culture, music, and dance reminds me of who we are and where we come from. It’s a celebration of Idoma pride like no other.”
For Mr Sunday Onyilo Agih, a resident of Abuja, the carnival was an opportunity to create memories with his friends: “We came back as a group, and the energy here is incredible. It’s not just a festival; it’s a reunion of the Idoma family. Every corner, every street tells a story of our history and resilience.”
Similarly, Agbada Idoko, who returned from the United Kingdom with friends and relatives, said, “Being away from home makes you appreciate the culture more. The music, the dances, the colors, it’s all so vibrant. The Idoma International Carnival is a reminder that no matter where we are in the world, Idoma land is always calling us home.”
From motor parks to the streets, and from hotels to local eateries, the presence of Idoma sons and daughters from near and far added a sense of reunion, pride, and community to the already electrifying atmosphere. The carnival was not only a display of heritage but also a homecoming that strengthened bonds across generations, reminding everyone that Idoma culture transcends geography.
The Idoma International Carnival is more than just an event. It is a living celebration of the Idoma spirit, a vibrant testament to resilience, creativity, and cultural pride.
As the final echoes of music and jubilation faded into the Otukpo night, one truth remained unmistakable: the Idoma people have a rich legacy to share, and the world is watching in awe.
