The Barr Julius Abure-led Labour Party has reaffirmed its leadership of the party, adding that its tenure is expected to run until 2028.
This clarification comes amidst a flurry of conflicting narratives surrounding Abure’s leadership, with various groups disputing its legitimacy and duration.
In a statement released yesterday, special adviser to Abure, Hon. Amb. AJU Elumelu-James, emphasised that Abure was unanimously elected as national chairman on March 29, 2021, to complete the tenure of the late Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam.
She said, “The party’s National Executive Council (NEC) subsequently extended Abure’s tenure by one year in April 2023, and a National Convention held on March 27, 2024, elected the current leadership.”
She stressed that no court has set aside the Nnewi convention or declared Abure’s tenure expired, citing the Supreme Court’s ruling that party leadership disputes are internal affairs.
The party urges members and the public to disregard misinformation and recognize the legitimacy of its current leadership.
End.
