The main campus of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) and the university community, Ikot Akpaden, in Mkpat Enin local government area has been enveloped with fear following the gruesome murder of a student by suspected cultists.
The deceased, simply identified as Abasi-Anyianga Morris, a final year computer science student, LEADERSHIP gathered was killed by suspected cultists a few weeks after emerging as the school ambassador with a “Mr. AKSU” title.
Sources indicated that his death may not be unconnected with his emergence as the winner of the contest to the chagrin of the opposition, forcing an angry cult group to eliminate him.
“We are currently taking our semester tests preparing for our examinations scheduled to begin Monday next week, and the majority of the students are in fear of possible reprisal reactions that may disrupt the examinations,” she noted.
She, therefore, urged security agencies to take proactive measures in order to forestall reprisal attacks that may culminate in full blown violence.
However, the police spokesman, SP Odiko MacDon, has assured of a peaceful and orderly atmosphere within and outside the campus as the Commissioner of Police (CP) Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP yesterday on the matter, the police spokesman disclosed that the late students’ leader was hacked to death in the process of trying to refill his generator with fuel, stressing that the CP, who had been very miffed over the incident, has deployed what he described as tactical resources to fish out the culprits involved in the dastardly act.
He said, “Our universities are citadels of academic excellence and not hacking grounds. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, is miffed and has ordered a full scale investigation with a mandate to bring perpetrators to book. He has also injected human assets for more watertight security within the university campus and its environs.”
