The White House has faced criticism after using an image of the Marvel superhero Spider-Man in a social media post promoting the work of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The post, shared on official administration accounts, depicted the character using his webs to capture individuals described by officials as criminal illegal aliens, alongside the caption, “Your friendly neighborhood ICE agents.”
The post sparked reactions online, with several fans questioning the use of the character for political messaging and calling on the copyright holders, Marvel, Disney, and Sony, to consider legal action. The controversy comes shortly after the release of the latest film in the franchise, Spider-Man: A Brand New Day.
The White House has previously utilized pop culture references and popular music to support its policies, leading to objections from prominent artists and actors including Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Pedro Pascal, Jamie Lee Curtis, Eva Longoria, and Tyler, the Creator.
