The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), has unveiled a N255 commemorative postage stamp to mark the commissioning of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) House in Arusha, Tanzania.
PAPU House, Arusha is the headquarters of the Pan African Postal Union which Nigeria is a member.
The postmaster general of the Federation/CEO of NIPOST, Hon. Sunday Adepopu unveiled the commemorative postage stamp in Abuja.
Represented by NIPOST director of Planning and Business Development, Dr Thomas Gaja, Adepopu said the initiative was to support PAPU with funds to complete its 17-storey Tower project and philately stamps to earn revenue for the organisation.
The postmaster general explained that postage stamps are globally regarded as one of the most effective means to provide information about a country’s history.
He said: “NIPOST, in conjunction with all PAPU member states, today (Saturday), will release a single Postage Stamp in (N250) denomination to mark the commissioning of the PAPU Tower, Arusha, Tanzania. The stamp has a surcharge of value N5 (making it N255).”
In her remarks, the NIPOST general manager, Philately, Funmilayo Esiri said the stamp is expected to last for six months, explaining that the Nigerian version depicts the PAPU Tower in Arusha, juxtaposed with the Zuma Rock.
