PCRC Flays Proposed Protest Against Police

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) at the national and state levels have condemned the planned protest being reportedly organised purporting to act on behalf of retired police officers against the current police management.

The PCRC also expressed its full and unequivocal support for the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in his ongoing efforts to reform, reposition, and professionalise the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement by the PCRC national chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Olaniyan, the organisation said the proposed protest, cloaked under the pretense of advocating for the rights of retired police personnel, was not only ill-timed but also appeared to be a calculated attempt to distract and discredit the commendable progress being made by the IGP and, by extension, the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“We categorically distance ourselves from, and condemn in its entirety, the proposed protest being reportedly organised purporting to act on behalf of retired police officers.

“As a critical bridge between the Nigeria Police Force and the communities it serves, the PCRC recognises the visible and impactful strides made under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun.

These include advances in community policing, intelligence-led crime prevention, and improvements in police welfare, discipline, and accountability.

“The PCRC holds in high regard the integrity, discipline, and patriotism of our retired police officers. We believe they possess both the dignity and appropriate channels to express concerns—if any—without resorting to opportunistic or politically motivated demonstrations. They do not need intermediaries such as Mr. Sowore to speak on their behalf.

“We particularly commend the IGP for the following: his steadfast commitment to the rule of law and protection of human rights; ongoing reforms promoting transparency and accountability within the Force; strengthened collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders; and strategic deployment of personnel and resources to address nationwide security challenges; his inclusive, open-door policy and consistent engagement with civil society organisations.”

The PCRC further said at this critical juncture “in our national life, we urge all well-meaning Nigerians, civil society groups, and public institutions to support the Nigeria Police Force and its leadership, rather than demoralize or politicize its activities.

“We encourage the IGP to remain focused and undeterred by the actions of those who seek to sow discord or undermine public confidence. The Nigerian people recognise genuine reform efforts and principled leadership when they see it.”
