Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on party members and supporters across the country to remain calm and law-abiding as the Court of Appeal prepares to deliver its ruling on the lingering leadership crisis within the party today.
The appeal was made by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, in a statement signed by the Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, yesterday.
Gov. Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the governors said the party and the nation were approaching a critical moment, noting that the judiciary holds the responsibility of ensuring justice, fairness, and stability in the country’s democratic process.
“As Nigeria awaits the ruling of the Appeal Court on the leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, we urge all party members and supporters nationwide to remain calm and conduct themselves in a peaceful and law-abiding manner,” the statement said.
According to the forum, the PDP remains committed to respecting the judicial process and will abide by the outcome of the court’s decision.
The governors emphasised that the party has always played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic development, both as a governing party and as a responsible opposition, contributing significantly to the strengthening of democratic institutions and the protection of citizens’ rights.
They therefore urged members of the party to demonstrate maturity and discipline before, during and after the court ruling.
The statement further noted that the party leadership would meet immediately after the judgment to review the decision and determine the appropriate steps going forward.
“We call on all party leaders and members to exercise maximum restraint and respect the rule of law. Our collective response must reflect maturity and our commitment to democratic principles,” the forum added.
.The PDP Governors’ Forum also reaffirmed the party’s readiness to remain a major political force in the country as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
According to the governors, the PDP remains determined to provide Nigerians with a credible and people-focused political alternative capable of addressing the nation’s challenges.
They encouraged party members with political ambitions for the 2027 elections to maintain confidence in the party’s platform, assuring that the PDP would provide a viable avenue for them to pursue their aspirations.
The governors also expressed confidence in the judiciary, describing it as a vital and impartial arm of government that has consistently defended the constitution and upheld democratic governance in the country.
They stressed that regardless of the outcome of the ruling, the party would continue to support democratic values, peaceful engagement and the rule of law.
The lingering leadership crisis within the party is widely believed to have deepened following the party’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
The convention, which many stakeholders had hoped would help stabilise the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections, instead exposed deep divisions among party leaders over the management of the party’s affairs and the legitimacy of the leadership positions.
The disputes later escalated into a legal battle, with aggrieved members approaching the courts to challenge aspects of the convention and the authority of some party officials, a development that eventually culminated in the appeal currently before the Court of Appeal.
