PDP Yet To Decide On Rivers Congress

A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ogbonna Nwuke, has declared that the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has not taken any decision on the outcome of the just-concluded congress in 12 states, including Rivers.

This is contrary to a report in a section of the media that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, has decided to accept the outcome of the party’s congress in the state.

Nwuke, who represented Etche/Omuma federal constituency in the National Assembly, disclosed this yesterday in a chat with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

He stated that there are issues concerning the conduct of the ward, local government and state congress in 12 states in the country and not only Rivers State.

The former lawmaker said: “So far, there is no official comment from the party on the position the party is taking on 12 states, including Rivers. So, we don’t make it look like it is a Rivers affair. There are problems in the way congress was conducted in 12 states and there ought to be resolutions at the end of the day.

“Now, we have heard unknown sources saying this is the position that NWC has taken. In other words, nobody concrete has appeared on the scene to say this is what NWC said. Therefore, it gives room to all kinds of speculations.”

Nwuke stated that as a political party built on the rule of law, respect for the rights of it’s members and respect for the judiciary, PDP cannot go ahead to recognise the congress that was conducted despite a court order barring it from going on with the exercise in the state.

He said: “Beyond that, I think that PDP is a party that is built on the rule of law; it is a party that respects rights of it’s membership and it is a party that has immense respect for the judiciary.

“As we speak, the court orders, which barred conduct of congress in Rivers State has not been vacated. Accordingly, everything that has been done is a nullity until the court so decides. So, those who are celebrating will be celebrating firick victory and as lawyers say, you cannot build something on nothing.”
