Ivory Coast secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 after a clinical 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their decisive Group E clash on Thursday.

The Elephants produced a composed and disciplined performance, with Nicolas Pépé scoring twice to ensure the West African side progressed to the knockout stage.

Having entered the match knowing victory would guarantee qualification, Ivory Coast controlled possession for long spells and eventually found the breakthrough in the 35th minute. Youngster Yann Diomandé delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Pépé, who calmly slotted home to give the Ivorians a deserved lead before half-time.

Curaçao attempted to respond after the restart but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against an organised Ivorian defence.

The Elephants doubled their advantage in the 64th minute when Pépé struck again. This time, Ibrahim Sangaré provided the assist, and the experienced forward finished clinically to register his second goal of the evening and effectively seal the result.

Despite late bookings for Curaçao captain Juninho Bacuna in the 75th minute and Gervane Kastaneer eight minutes later, the Caribbean side failed to find a way back into the contest.

Ivory Coast comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to record their second victory of the group stage, having previously defeated Ecuador before narrowly losing to Germany.

The win was enough to book the Elephants’ place in the Round of 32, marking a significant achievement for the West Africans as they continue their quest for a maiden FIFA World Cup title.

Pépé’s match-winning display underlined his importance to the team, with the forward providing the cutting edge when it mattered most. Diomandé also impressed with an energetic performance, while Sangaré controlled the midfield and capped his display with the assist for the second goal.

For Curaçao, the defeat brought an end to a challenging World Cup campaign. After suffering a heavy loss to Germany and drawing with Ecuador, they were unable to spring an upset against the Ivorians and bowed out without reaching the knockout rounds.
