Peter Obi Media Office Urges Nigerians to Focus on Governance, Ignore ‘Trivialities’

The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has urged Nigerians to focus on the country’s pressing socio-economic challenges rather than what it described as “trivialities” being promoted by the ruling class to divert attention from issues of governance.

In a statement issued to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri, the media office said reactions to Obi’s recent television interview had been overshadowed by attempts to focus on minor issues instead of the substantive concerns he raised about Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

According to the statement, the NDC presidential candidate outlined structural defects in governance, worsening economic hardship and practical steps towards national recovery, but critics chose to dwell on what it described as non-essential issues.

“The public has once again witnessed the predictable reflex of the ruling class: a desperate scramble to weaponise minor slips, cherry-pick narratives and elevate non-issues over critical national debate,” the statement said.

The media office argued that while millions of Nigerians continue to battle inflation, food insecurity, rising energy costs, unemployment and insecurity, political actors are deliberately shifting attention away from these challenges.

“This is not an accident; it is a calculated political strategy designed to keep the public emotionally agitated and intellectually distracted from demanding real accountability,” it stated.

POMR maintained that the country’s immediate concern should be governance rather than political rhetoric.

“Nigeria is in a crisis of governance, not a battle of soundbites. The debate that Nigeria desperately needs today is not about political drama or deliberate semantic distortions; it is about how to rescue a failing economy, restore the purchasing power of the naira, secure innocent lives, and transform our nation from a consumption-driven economy into a productive powerhouse,” the statement added.

“We reject the rules of engagement set by the ruling class. The Obi-Kwankwaso Movement and the millions of patriotic Nigerians who stand with us will not be dragged into the gutter of trivial controversies created by those who have failed the nation. We refuse to allow those responsible for the country’s current plight to set the agenda for public discourse,” it said.

Calling on the media and the public to remain vigilant, POMR urged Nigerians, especially young people, to demand answers to critical national issues.

“Do not yield to the diversionary tactics of propaganda. Whenever the handlers of this administration attempt to turn a national conversation into a circus of irrelevancies, ask them the hard questions: Where is the plan to lower food inflation? How do we secure our farms and highways? What is being done to rescue millions falling below the poverty line?” the statement said.

The media office reaffirmed Obi’s commitment to what it described as a new Nigeria founded on competence, transparency, character and practical solutions.

“Peter Obi remains unwavering in his commitment to a new Nigeria built on competence, character, transparency and actionable solutions. No amount of coordinated distraction or smear will deter him from speaking truth to power and standing firmly with the Nigerian people,” the statement added.

It concluded by urging Nigerians to remain focused on issues affecting their welfare, saying, “Let us remain focused on the issues that truly matter. A new Nigeria is possible, but only if we refuse to be distracted.”
