A simple act of honesty by students at Dominican University, Ibadan, Oyo State, left a lasting impression on former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and ADC chieftain, Mr Peter Obi, during a visit to the institution on Monday.

He said the act has renewed his hope for a new Nigeria.

Obi revealed that after concluding his engagement with students at the university and while leaving the campus, he realised he had forgotten his mobile phone, which was later found and returned to him by the University students.

“However, a simple yet powerful incident during my visit renewed my hope for Nigeria. I had forgotten my phone, and as I was leaving the university, students found it and returned it to me,” Obi said in a post on his official X handle.

According to him, the gesture reflected the core values of the institution, noting that Dominican University was not only committed to academic excellence but also to shaping the moral character of its students.

“This act of honesty reflects what Dominican University stands for: not only as a centre of learning but also as a place where character is shaped,” he stated.

Obi explained that he departed Lagos at about 5:30 a.m. and arrived in Ibadan by 8:00 a.m. for the visit, which he described as an opportunity to interact with students and inspire them to pursue excellence in both learning and character.

He said the visit featured an interactive session, including questions and answers with the students, which he found valuable and fulfilling.

In support of the institution’s growth, Obi announced a donation of ₦30 million to aid its ongoing development, stressing that education remains central to national progress.

“After what I found to be a valuable interaction, including a question-and-answer session, I donated ₦30 million to support the university’s ongoing development. This reaffirmed my belief that education is the cornerstone of progress,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, arguing that national transformation was achievable if education was complemented with strong moral values.

“I firmly believe that if we place equal emphasis on education and moral integrity, Nigeria’s greatness is within reach,” Obi added.

He concluded the post with his signature optimism, declaring: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
