The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee investigating the controversial operations of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) has declared the appointment letter presented by the council’s self-acclaimed Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, as fake.
The committee made the declaration on Wednesday during the continuation of its investigative hearing in Abuja.
Chairman of the panel, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi, said findings before the committee showed that the document relied upon by Adeyemi to claim the office of Director-General was not authentic.
Gagdi revealed that the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who appeared before the panel for the second time, also confirmed that the documents presented by Adeyemi were forged.
“It was established that the so-called letter of appointment was fake, confirmed by different agencies, and the Act presented to the Head of Service was equally fake, forged by the DG; it was established,” Gagdi stated.
Walson-Jack attended the hearing in compliance with the committee’s summons and made what lawmakers described as her final submissions on the matter.
Also present were Deputy Commissioner of Police Olufemi Akinola and Assistant Commissioner of Police Bashir Abdullahi, who represented the Inspector-General of Police.
Adeyemi, however, failed to appear before the committee.
His absence came despite the committee’s earlier directive issued on Monday, ordering the Inspector-General of Police to produce him within 48 hours.
The lawmakers had described the establishment and operation of the purported council as a serious breach of due process and raised concerns over how the body allegedly obtained official recognition and processed government correspondence.
According to members of the panel, Adeyemi’s appearance is considered crucial to explaining the legal basis of the council’s operations and the authenticity of documents used in its dealings with government institutions.
LEADERSHIP reports that the PFIPC scandal has raised questions and conversations on how it was created, funded and functioned with some calling for arrests and resignations of those allegedly involved.
