Pharma Company Deepens Local Drug Production With New WHO-standard Plant In Ogun

SAM Pharmaceutical Limited has taken a major step to strengthen drug manufacturing in Nigeria with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical plant in Ota, Ogun State.

The development, which coincided with the company’s 55th anniversary, is expected to boost domestic production capacity and support ongoing efforts to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported medicines.

The facility, built in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards, has the capacity to produce over 400 million tablets, 50 million capsules, 2 million bottles of liquid formulations and 1 million sachet-based products monthly.

Speaking at the commissioning, Chairman and Managing Director of SAM Pharmaceutical, Amit Bhojwani, described the project as a turning point for the company’s growth and its contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare system.

According to him, the new plant represents the company’s next phase, tagged “SAM Pharm 2.0,” driven by innovation, improved formulations and adherence to global standards.

He said the investment underscores the company’s commitment to quality assurance, pharmacovigilance and regulatory compliance, while positioning it to compete within Nigeria and across the African market.

The event attracted top government officials and key stakeholders in the health sector, including the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, and Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, among others.

Stakeholders at the event emphasised the importance of strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing as Nigeria continues to grapple with heavy reliance on imported drugs and rising healthcare demands.

In addition to expanding its production footprint, the company also demonstrated its commitment to public health through a corporate social responsibility initiative, providing deworming treatment to over 5,000 children in communities across Ogun State.

With over five decades of operations in both human and veterinary medicine, SAM Pharmaceutical remains a key player in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry, contributing to efforts aimed at improving drug availability, affordability and national health security.

The company disclosed that plans are already underway to further expand the facility’s production lines in response to growing demand.
