PHC Conducts Emergency Caesarean Section

Ohiya Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC), Umuahia South local government, Abia State has delivered a 24-year old woman, Chikamso Ibekwe, of a set of twins (boys) through emergency caesarean section.

The state commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche, announced this after visiting the centre which is one of the 200 retrofitted by the Governor Alex Otti administration under “Operation Ekwueme”.

He said the availability of modern equipment, drugs, oxygen and quick intervention of skilled personnel, which were hitherto lacking at the centre, contributed to the success of the procedure.

His words: “This can only be possible because there are facilities in the PHC that could support emergency care. And of course, the fact that we have competent nurses and  doctor who were on ground to handle the situation.

“This is a proof that the PHCs are yielding the desired dividend. If there is anybody in doubt, that the healthcare reforms of Alex Otti are bearing fruits, this is one incontrovertible evidence.

“Because it has never been recorded in the history of the state or maybe that of healthcare that caesarean deliveries have become routine or easily performed for such big emergencies in a PHC. And it’s because there are facilities here”.

Speaking, Dr Joseph Ngene, who led the medical team that conducted the procedure, said the woman arrived with extreme high blood pressure and seizures, which they quickly stabilized.

‎Ngene further explained that the procedure was smooth and successful, with both mother and babies, weighing 3.2 kilogramme each, are responding well to treatment.

‎In his reaction, the husband of the women, Mr Patrick Ibekwe expressed gratitude to the governor for retrofitting the centre, describing the outcome of the procedure as life-saving.

‎”I’m so, so happy. And I thank God. If not for our governor, what would have happened?” said the mechanic, who also received financial support from the government.
