The Abia State commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche has said primary healthcare centre (PHC) is the most important level of health services in a society.
Uche made the assertion while speaking to LEADERSHIP in Umuahia, the state capital on the level of the government‘s ongoing retrofitting of 200 PHCs across the state.
The governor, Alex Otti had about one month ago inaugurated a programme tagged „Ekwueme“ for the retrofitting of the 200 PHCs within 100 days.
His words: „Primary healthcare centre dentifies to the healthcare needs of people where they live. So it is the primary point of contact with people in the healthcare system.
“That is why it is one of the most audacious investments of this administration to address this previously neglected sector of the health ecosystem.
Uche, who explained that the state has 948 PHCs related that: „His Excellency just started with 200. But, even the 200 is quite an audacious and very visionary move.
As at date, according to him 20 out of the 200 had been retrofitted, while the rest are about different levels of completion ranging from 50 percent to 80 percent.
“This is very much inline with the marching order issued by the governor. And I am sure, we‘ll meet the dateline as expected,“ the commissioner added.
