Sumedha Energy Limited, the joint venture between Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company (SEEPCO) and NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL), has assured the federal government that its operations in the Niger Delta are aligned with the objectives of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) by prioritising sustainable development of host communities.
The assurance was given during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro, to the company’s operational base in Iko Town, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The visit formed part of the minister’s field assessment tour of oil and gas host communities in Eastern Obolo to assess local conditions, strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and identify opportunities for sustainable poverty reduction and inclusive development.
Accompanying the minister were the Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Udo, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Lady Emem Ibanga, and other government officials.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Head of Security and Community Relations, Col. Deb Kumar Bose, said Sumedha Energy operates in 11 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State and employs about 3,000 workers, contributing significantly to job creation and economic growth.
He said the company remains committed to local content development by engaging qualified indigenous professionals and building mutually beneficial relationships with its host communities.
According to Bose, Sumedha Energy has implemented a comprehensive Community Development Programme that has delivered infrastructure projects, healthcare interventions, educational support, scholarships, vocational skills acquisition and empowerment initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods across its host communities.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to working with government and other stakeholders to promote inclusive growth and long-term socio-economic development.
The minister commended the company’s community development efforts, saying the assessment tour was intended to provide firsthand knowledge of the realities, challenges and opportunities in host communities.
“I came on this tour to have a direct feel of the communities and gain a better perspective of their realities,” Doro said, stressing the need for evidence-based interventions in tackling poverty and humanitarian challenges.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration among government agencies, development partners, host communities and private sector operators in delivering sustainable development and improving the welfare of people in oil-producing communities.
Sumedha Energy reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote community well-being, economic empowerment and long-term prosperity across its areas of operation in Akwa Ibom State.
