A tragic event unfolded in the Pakata area of Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, as suspected cult groups clashed, resulting in the death of one person and several others injured.
The development also led to substantial property damage, including the destruction of many vehicles.
The violent confrontation, which took place over the weekend, has stirred concerns about the rise of cult-related violence in the state.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene on Monday, reports that the conflict began when a suspected cultist, known as Abiodun, allegedly shot and killed one Yusuf, a member of a rival cult group, following a dispute.
In an act of retaliation, members of Yusuf’s group launched a vicious attack on Saturday at the Gana Compound, believed to be the residence of the suspect, Abiodun.
Armed with guns, cutlasses, and other lethal weapons, the avenging group sought to exact justice for their fallen member. This reprisal led to the destruction of over six cars and left many individuals injured.
An eyewitness recounted the harrowing scenes, saying, “When the gang arrived, they started shooting sporadically, causing people to scamper for safety in all directions.”
The situation escalated when the attackers stormed the compound, targeting and assaulting family members of Abiodun with machetes, which resulted in multiple injuries.
The Kwara Police Command has confirmed the incident, with the Command’s spokesperson, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirming that, “Investigation is still ongoing.”
The suspect behind the initial killing, Abiodun, has reportedly fled the area following the incident and remained at large.
