In a strategic move suggesting a political realignment ahead of 2027 general election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hosted the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, in his Abuja residence on Monday afternoon.
Atiku, who was also the candidate of the major opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in the same elections, announced the meeting on his verified X handle (formerly Twitter).
The presidential election was, however, won by the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Atiku and Obi had a cordial political history as the latter was the running mate of the former in the 2019 general election on the platform of the PDP. They, however, parted ways in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, a development that saw Obi picking the presidential ticket of the LP.
In the 2023 presidential election won by Tinubu, Atiku trailed behind as the runner-up while Obi emerged third.
Atiku described the Monday’s meeting with Obi as an honour and privilege for him without providing any detail of the engagement.
The former vice president wrote: “It was my honour and privilege to host @PeterObi today. -AA.”
