Paul Ibe, media adviser to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over congestion of patients and other help-seekers at a Garki District Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, describing the situation as evidence of pressure on the city’s healthcare system.
In a post shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday evening, accompanied by pictures showing overcrowding, Ibe said the incident occurred at about 1:00pm on Wednesday April 15, 2026.
“This was the front desk of the Garki General Hospital, Abuja, as at 1:00PM today, Wednesday, 15 April 2026,” he wrote.
He described severe crowding at the facility, noting that access points within the hospital were blocked by patients waiting for medical attention.
“The second entrance into the hospital, adjoining the point where patients coming to keep medical appointments are processed, is completely blocked with prospective patients,” he said.
According to him, the situation reflects broader strain on public healthcare infrastructure in the nation’s capital, with many general hospitals operating beyond capacity.
“There’s no telling that this General Hospital, like so many others in the nation’s capital, is overwhelmed,” Ibe stated.
He argued that the current number of general hospitals across Abuja’s districts was insufficient to meet growing demand for healthcare services.
“One General Hospital per District area is grossly insufficient,” he said.
Ibe called for urgent expansion of healthcare facilities, insisting that additional hospitals were needed to ease pressure on the existing ones.
“Two or more extra General Hospitals per District area are urgently needed to solve this situation,” he added.
