Despite ongoing school renovation efforts across Bauchi State, pupils of Unguwar Hardo Primary School in Miri district, Bauchi local government area of the State were still being forced to attend lessons under the scorching sun and the shade of trees.

Our correspondent learned that the pupils continued to face challenges due to inadequate learning environments, even as teachers strived to maintain classroom instruction.

Journalists observed this serious situation on Thursday during monitoring exercise by the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) to various schools on the 2026/2027 school resumption in the Bauchi South Senatorial District.

The team, led by Mallam Abbas Abdulmumini, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at SUBEB, expressed disappointment over the head teacher’s absence from duty at the Unguwar Hardo Primary School in Miri district.

Mallam Abdulmumini emphasised that the Bauchi State government, through the leadership of SUBEB Executive Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Duguri, would not tolerate neglect of official responsibilities.

He added that the exercise was a routine inspection aimed at ensuring effective teaching, improving student retention, and boosting enrollment in public schools.

While expressing concerns about the learning conditions at the school, Mallam Abdulmumini commended the community’s effort in constructing a new block of classrooms and noted satisfaction with student enrollment levels.

He directed Mrs. Talatu Yakubu, Education Secretary of the Bauchi Local Education Authority, to take necessary action regarding the head teacher’s absenteeism.

Recall that recently the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Mohammed Lawal Rimin Zayam, led a high-level delegation on an inspection visit to project sites of the ongoing renovation of public schools across the state.

The delegation included the Bauchi State AGILE Project Coordinator, Hajiya Ladi Mohammed Hamma, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education Projects, Mustapha Rabo.

Speaking during the recent inspection, Dr. Rimin Zayam said the exercise reflects the unwavering commitment of Governor Bala Mohammed to rehabilitating all dilapidated public schools and providing a conducive learning environment for students across Bauchi State.

He disclosed that the first phase of the renovation project covered 252 public schools, adding that an additional 256 schools have already been validated and will soon benefit from the second phase of the intervention.

The Commissioner called on all relevant stakeholders to support the government’s efforts, stressing that improved educational infrastructure is vital to enhancing learning outcomes and overall academic performance.

Dr. Rimin Zayam also expressed deep appreciation to Governor Mohammed for his visionary leadership and sustained investment in the education sector, noting that the initiative has brought renewed hope and smiles to students in public schools across the state.
