For riding bicycle to traverse the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State with his famous Raleigh bicycle decorated with Nigerian and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flags in campaign trail of Governor Umo Eno during the run-up to the 2023 elections, Comrade Usen Matthew’s support for the ruling party in the State has been rewarded.
Described as the number one fan of the PDP in Akwa Ibom State, Mathew, it was learnt, grabbed the attention of Governor Eno for his solo campaign spectacle on his special bicycle before, during and even after the governorship poll, which Eno won, against all odds.
Recalling his Mathew’s spectacular bicycle campaign trajectory, Osondu Ahriika of the State’s Ethical and Reorientation Agency said: “He paid his dues during the Pastor Umo Eno governorship campaign trail. Across the State, he was riding alongside with his old-fashioned Raleigh brand bicycle.
“Heavily adorned with PDP flags and memorabilia of all kinds including stickers, logo, vampaign posters, etc.
“In every sense of the word, he was the PDP’s unofficial mascot throughout the 2023 governorship campaign.
“As we journeyed through the 31 Local Government Areas of the State, he was usually one of the early birds that arrived at the Royalty by Signature Hotel at Ewet Housing Estate, where we usually took off for campaigns.
“With self-motivated fanfare, he aroused fans and soon got the nickname: ‘Ette Enangukwak of PDP’ (The PDP bicycle man).”
For these, the governor, at the weekend during the 17th annual Akwa Ibom State Christmas Carol night, remembered him with a handshake of N5 million, urging him to ‘upgrade from bicycle to a motorcycle’.
