Libyan authorities have apprehended a driver in the Bishr area for attempting to smuggle six undocumented Nigerian women.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday during a routine police patrol that intercepted the vehicle.

According to Migrant Rescue Watch, an organisation dedicated to monitoring migrant activities, the driver, in a bid to avoid arrest, falsely claimed that the women were his family members. However, the authorities quickly uncovered the deception and took all individuals involved into custody.

A statement from Migrant Rescue Watch highlighted the incident, saying, “Libya 05.08.24 – Police patrols arrested in Bishr area a Libyan driver for an attempted smuggling of 6 undocumented female #migrants of Nigerian nationality. The driver claimed that the female passengers were his family. All transferred to Bishr Police Dept. for legal action.”

The arrested individuals have been transferred to the Bishr Police Department, where they are currently undergoing further legal processing. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, focusing on the broader implications of the smuggling attempt.
