In a major political development ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s 2025 elective national convention slated for Ibadan, Oyo State, Northern stakeholders of the party have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the position of the party’s National Chairman.
The decision was reached after an intensive consultative meeting of Northern PDP stakeholders held in Abuja, where party leaders from across the region unanimously adopted Turaki as their preferred candidate.
According to sources at the meeting, the endorsement aims to present a unified Northern position ahead of the convention scheduled to hold from November 15 to 16, 2025.
A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting stated that the move was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen party unity and ensure equitable regional representation within the PDP’s leadership structure.
“After wide consultations and deliberations, Northern PDP stakeholders have unanimously endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, as the consensus candidate for the office of National Chairman,” the communiqué read.
It added that the chairmanship slot had been zoned to the North-West geopolitical zone to promote inclusivity and balance within the party.
“The decision to zone the position to the North-West reflects our commitment to regional equity, internal cohesion, and the collective aspiration to reposition the PDP ahead of future electoral contests,” the statement further noted.
LEADERSHIP reports that Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and long-time party stalwart, previously served as Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs under former President Goodluck Jonathan. He was also a former presidential aspirant in the PDP’s 2019 primary election.
