The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated 1,000 bags of 50kg rice and assorted food items to workers of the National Mosque and residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area councils as part of her Ramadan outreach.
The items donated include 450 packs of tin milk, 50 packs of powdered milk, 50 packs of sugar, 50 packs of Milo, 50 packs of Three Crown milk, and 50 packs of Ovaltine.
The distribution, which commenced with beneficiaries from the area councils, covered Abaji, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Kuje. Other beneficiaries included NTA Sahur Life, National Mosque staff, including three mu’azzins and general staff, Al-Habeebiya Islamic Society, Muslim public servants, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, among others.
Presenting the items on behalf of the First Lady on Thursday, Chairman of the National Mosque Welfare Committee, Mallam Abubakar Sadiq, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as unprecedented.
“I have said it before and I will say it again without any contradiction, the First Lady has the will in her heart. We have not seen this in the past. We have seen people who have occupied that office before; they have done what they did, but as far as we are concerned, for the Muslim community here to be remembered in their time of need, this is the first time we are experiencing this,” he said.
He added that whoever succeeds the First Lady should emulate her example.
“Don’t read any other meaning from what is happening. Whatever comes to the First Lady, she remembers the mosque, she remembers the poor around the mosque, and she sends their share. That is what we should do. Opportunities shouldn’t be confined to one place; they should spread so that everybody will have a sense of what is happening,” Sadiq stated.
Responding to questions about how he feels receiving consistent support from a Christian First Lady, Sadiq emphasised that leadership transcends religious and tribal lines.
“That is how it should be. A leader is a leader regardless of her religion or tribe. You are a leader to all, so you should take care of them, and that is what the First Lady is exemplifying,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms. Fatima Sanda, Ameera of the Muslim Association, FCT Council, described the donation as timely, especially given the economic hardship faced by many families during Ramadan.
“This is a great effort. This is a thing that the people need, and it came at the right time because this Ramadan, people are in hardship. Once you give anything out, you are going to get much more reward. We appreciate this effort. May God continue to bless her efforts and guide her,” she said.
Also speaking, a representative of the Al-Habeebiya Islamic Society, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, commended the First Lady and her household for what he described as a magnanimous gesture.
“Alhamdulillah, this is highly commendable. This is magnanimous from the first family. We pray to Almighty Allah to bless them for this. As you can see, the things are going down to the beneficiaries. May Allah reward them. We are highly impressed,” he said.
LEADERSHIP reports that Thursday’s donation marked the fourth time the First Lady has extended support to the mosque community since the commencement of Ramadan, with two distributions to the general public and two specifically to the National Mosque community and Muslims. .
