A routine aircraft maintenance flight turned into an online sensation after a Ravenair pilot used the plane’s flight path to spell out “I’m bored”, delighting aviation enthusiasts who tracked the unusual journey in real time.

What was supposed to be an ordinary post-maintenance test flight became an unexpected source of entertainment after a Ravenair pilot used a light aircraft’s flight path to write “I’m bored” across the skies, with the message later spotted on the flight-tracking platform FlightRadar24.

The Piper Tomahawk aircraft departed Liverpool at about 11:30 a.m  for a routine test flight following the replacement of a component. During the approximately two-hour flight, the aircraft flew over the Wirral peninsula, Cheshire and parts of North Wales, tracing out the cheeky phrase before returning safely to Merseyside at about 1:30 p.m.

The unusual aerial message quickly attracted attention online, with aviation enthusiasts and social media users praising both the pilot’s sense of humour and the precision required to create the words in the sky using only the aircraft’s flight path.

Ravenair Operations Manager Wayne Barrett explained that the pilot, a flying instructor in his 20s, had been carrying out a standard maintenance test after engineers replaced a part on the aircraft.

“I think the pilot was literally a bit bored as it was just a test flight. Mind you it was pretty skillful flying,” Barrett said.

“I think the part was a cylinder that needed replacing.

“So when this happens we take the plane up for a test run to make sure everything is OK, which it was.

“He was a bit bored but he probably had to concentrate a lot in the end to spell out the words so he was probably anything but.

“He’s not in trouble but we have had a lot of attention from it.

“The plane is now safely back in the hangar and the pilot is on his day off.”

Barrett said the aircraft successfully passed all required checks, stressing that the humorous flight path did not affect the purpose of the mission.
