The Senate, on Thursday, formally recorded the defection of Senator Pam Dachungyang, representing Plateau North Senatorial District, from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was conveyed in a letter submitted by the lawmaker and read on the floor of the Senate by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, at plenary.

In the letter titled “Notice of Defection from the Action Democratic Party,” Senator Dachungyang informed the Senate of his decision to leave the ADP for APC with immediate effect.

“I write to inform you of my defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) effective immediately,” the Senator wrote.

He explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents, political associates, and other stakeholders, noting that the move was aimed at aligning with a political platform that reflects his commitment to good governance and inclusive development.

“This decision follows extensive consultations with my constituents, my political associates, and my stakeholders, and is informed by the need to align with a political platform that best reflects my commitment to good governance, inclusive development, and the overall interest of the good people of my senatorial district,” he said.

Senator Dachungyang also attributed his defection to persistent internal crises within the ADP, which he said had hampered his effectiveness as a lawmaker.

“My defection is also necessitated by irreconcilable differences and persistent internal wrangling within the Action Democratic Party, which have hindered my ability to effectively contribute to the party’s ideals and deliver quality representation to my constituents,” he added.

Expressing confidence in his new political party, the Plateau North Senator said the APC provides a more stable and progressive platform for public service.

“I am confident that the All Progressives Congress offers a more stable and progressive platform through which I can continue to serve my constituency and the nation with renewed focus and dedication,” he said.

He concluded by requesting the Senate to formally recognise his defection in line with constitutional provisions and to admit him as a member of the ruling APC.
