The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 42 alleged cultists through an intelligence-led operation that cuts across the  metropolis.

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, who disclosed this to newsmen, said within the first two weeks the command had made breakthroughs worthy of notification from members of the public.

He said, “I am delighted to know that in the call of this highly-coordinated intelligence-led anti-cultism operation, we have mopped up and arrested 42 cultists in an operation carried out at Ijora, Orile, Ebute-Metta and Ikorodu.’’

He added that, ‘’In the course of this operation, a total of 10 firearms of various descriptions were recovered from the cultists. This includes six locally-made shotguns,  three locally-made semi-automatic fabricated pistols and one English-made pistol, three axes, three cutlasses, three daggers, three Knives, thirty live cartridges and multiple charms.’’

Owohunwa stressed that he had warned the cultist and criminal elements that in line with the promise he made to Lagosians, the police command will deploy all operation assets that will provide the leadership of the special unit of the Lagos State Command to sustain this battle against cultists who are determined to threaten the internal security of Lagos and also threaten the value for peace and wish for stable order for Lagosians to operate.

The CP reiterated that cultists  have the option to change for the better and opt for a legitimate means of livelihood or have the Nigerian police and the law to contend with as the law enforcement agencies would not sit back and allow miscreants to continue arming themselves and engaging in senseless warfare and unrest in  Lagos.

He emphasised that strengthening synergy between the citizen and the police will bring about effective policing as the police cannot do it all alone.
