Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have been deployed to maintain security cordon around the Ikot Ekpene local government custodial centre, following the discovery of some explosives materials around the prison facility.

According to insider sources who confided in LEADERSHIP yesterday, some accomplices were allegedly behind the plot to orchestrate a jailbreak to free some high profile criminals being held at the centre.

However, the plot has been uncovered by the police, who were able to forestall the attack and recovered the bomb materials with the follow-up measures to safeguard inmates.

“The state police command has averted what could have been a major security breach and potential tragedy at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre, Ikot Ekpene, following the timely recovery of high explosive ordnance within the facility’s vicinity,” the police spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed to journalists in Uyo, the state capital.

She recalled that “on 27th April, 2026, acting swiftly on credible intelligence received from correctional authorities regarding suspicious items discovered around the custodial facility, the CP Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, BomPol Base 38, Uyo, alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.”
