The Kano State Police Command has begun investigating a case of homicide following the murder of Ladan Malam Zubairu, a mosque custodian, at the Yusuf Garko Mosque in Maraba Quarters, Hotoro area of Kano.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, during the early morning Fajr prayers, leaving the local community in shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, whose name is withheld, arrived at the mosque to participate in the prayer session but was told by Malam Zubairu that the prayer had not yet commenced.
In a sudden act of violence, the young man allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked the custodian, slashing his throat. It was reported that the suspect also took parts of the throat and placed it in a bag before fleeing the scene.
The situation quickly escalated when an angry mob from the community chased down the suspect, capturing and lynching him. The mob also set fire to the suspect’s residence.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson of the Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, revealed that officers responded swiftly to the incident.
“The police command is pleased to report that normalcy has been restored in the area, with security personnel deployed to maintain law and order. The police investigation team has recovered the victim’s throat from the suspect’s pocket, and both bodies have been taken to Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano, all certified dead and awaiting autopsy.”
The Commissioner of Police, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident. The police have also appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the investigation.
