A suspected member of a kidnap gang has been killed by the anti-crime squad of the Anambra State Police Command.
Sadly, however, a victim of a kidnap gang in the state lost his life.
Public relations officer of the state police command (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the development a joint anti-crime squad of the state police command saying the team neutralised a member of a kidnap gang during a gun-duel with members of his gang at about 8.30pm along Agulu-Nnobi Road in Aniocha local government area on Friday.
He said that the joint security team which also comprised some operatives of the Anambra State Vigilant Group (AVG), while escorting a VIP, was engaged in a gun battle by a gang of hoodlums operating in two SUV vehicles at Neni area along Agulu-Nnobi road in Aniocha local government.
He said that the security team, however, overpowered the hoodlums, killed one of them, recovered a pump action gun, five live cartridges, five machetes, two SUV jeeps and two pairs of desert shoes while some of the gang members escaped with bullet wounds into the bush.
The state police command spokesman said that the security team had since then sustained operation in the area to ensure that they arrest the fleeing members of the gang and urged members of the public, especially residents of the area, to help the police command with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the hoodlums.
Ikenga also narrated that another joint security team of the command attached to Dunukofia police division in Dunukofia local government rescued two abductees somewhere at Ukwulu community area of the local government area following a distress call.
He, however, said after one of the rescued abductees was later confirmed dead by medical personnel at a hospital where the police team took them to.
He said that the abductees were abducted at about 7am on Wednesday somewhere along Ugwunwasike-Ogidi road in Idemili-North local government.
He said that the kidnappers had shot at the abductee when they noticed that they were being trailed by the security team.
Ikenga said that the kidnappers had abandoned their two victims and their operational vehicle and fled due to the hot chase.
He said that the police team recovered their vehicle and has also sustained operation to track the fleeing criminals down to make sure they faced the full weight of the law.
